From College Athlete to Corporate Leader: What Sports Taught Me About Business

There’s something magical about game day.

The roar of the crowd, the adrenaline, the split-second decisions. As a college athlete, I lived for that edge—the moment where preparation met pressure. But what I didn’t realize at the time? That same edge would shape how I show up as a leader today.

Now, I’m no longer lacing up cleats or hearing a coach’s whistle, but every day I walk into boardrooms, Zoom calls, and one-on-one coaching sessions carrying the mindset sports built in me. And here's the truth: the field may change, but the game doesn't.

1. Discipline Isn’t Sexy—But It’s Everything

In college, discipline wasn’t optional. You trained when you were tired. You showed up whether you felt like it or not. You learned to show up for your teammates and yourself—day in and day out. That rhythm taught me that consistency is often more powerful than talent.

Now, leading teams and executives, I see that same pattern. The leaders who outperform? They don’t wait for inspiration. They build systems, rituals, and habits that carry them—even on the tough days. And the data backs it up: managers account for 70% of the variance in employee engagement scores. Translation? Your discipline as a leader directly shapes how your team shows up. (Source: Inc. Magazine)

2. Pressure Doesn’t Break You—It Spotlights You

Ask any athlete: pressure doesn’t create cracks—it reveals what’s already built underneath. During my playing days, I learned that what you do when no one’s watching determines what you can do when everyone is.

Business is no different. When the stakes are high, it’s not about doing something new—it’s about trusting your prep. Strong leaders don’t flinch under pressure; they lean into the moment because they’ve already put in the reps. Research shows that CEOs with strong character bring in nearly five times greater return on assets than those with weak character. (Source: Ivey Business School)

So yeah, pressure isn’t the villain—it’s your spotlight.

3. Talent Gets You Recruited—Trust Gets You the Ring

I’ve played with some incredible athletes. But the teams that actually won? They had one thing others didn’t—trust. Ego was checked. Roles were clear. The bench was as bought-in as the starters. In corporate life, it’s easy to chase rockstars. But championships aren’t won by MVPs—they’re won by teams that trust each other enough to pass the ball, call the play, and sacrifice when it counts. Teams that prioritize trust and team building report a 25% increase in performance. (Source: Peak Sales Recruiting) Trust isn’t soft—it’s a strategic advantage.

4. Rest Is a Weapon (Not a Weakness)

Back in college, we used to treat sleep like it was optional. We'd brag about pulling all-nighters like we were warriors. (Spoiler alert: we were not okay.) Now, I coach high-performers to treat recovery as strategy—not luxury. If you’re constantly grinding, you’re not optimizing—you’re surviving. Just like your muscles need time to rebuild, your mind needs space to reflect, reframe, and recharge. Proactive rest leads to a 26% increase in productivity and a 20% reduction in burnout. (Source: UCR Extension) In other words: rest is performance fuel.

5. You Are More Than Your Jersey

This one hit me the hardest. When I stopped playing, I wrestled with a question no coach had prepared me for: Who am I without the jersey?

It’s a question a lot of athletes—and leaders—avoid. But facing it head-on taught me something powerful: you’re not what you do. You’re who you are becoming. That shift—from achievement-based identity to purpose-based living—is what opens the door to real transformation. And science backs that up too. Leadership identity positively predicts team performance through a mediating role of group-based pride. (Source: NIH)
